After many years of design practice and searching for a systematic and scientific methodology to review and understand the projected meanings of colour, academic studies lead to a colour system that combines colour science and colour meaning.
We have applied and evolved these methodologies, combined with experience and original research, to many commercial situations including:

This talk explains how scientific methods and structure can be used for colour understanding and selection in any industry. After discussing the basics of colour this 20-minute talk moves to B.I.D’s original colour research on food packaging.

VALE (AUGUST 2010): SHIGENOBU KOBAYASHI
Born Japan 1925. Kobayashi studied electrical engineering and psychology while having strong interests in art and design. He became an internationally recognised teacher, colour researcher and speaker. In 1966 he founded the Nippon Color and Design Research Institute and developed the Hue and Tone System and the Color Image Scale (patented 1982). Kobayashi published 38 books on topics related to psychology, aesthetics, art, architecture, design and visual communication, three of which have been translated into english. We recognise his towering contributions to the understanding of colour with gratitude, and acknowledge him as a Master.
We have applied and evolved these methodologies, combined with experience and original research, to many commercial situations including:
- adding science to colour palette creation – corporate / brand / product
- adding science to colour palette modification – corporate / brand / product
- understanding the unspoken language of colour in commercial situations
- documenting how brand colours communicate brand messages
- developing an effective brief-taking process
- using regional colour mapping useful for town planning, Council branding
